Foster Grandparents |
|
From its inception in 1965, the Foster Grandparent Program has provided a chance for old and young alike to answer each other’s needs. As school based mentors, friends and role models, Foster Grandparents work one-on-one with children or in small groups in classroom settings assisting with academics, social skills or other special needs. They display an abundance of personal warmth, emotional maturity and social responsiveness. Foster Grandparents help children learn to succeed and be happy. They enhance a child’s life. Foster Grandparents work twenty to thirty-five hours a week in day care centers, preschools, Head Start Programs and public or private schools. They also help young people living in exceptional care facilities with developmental needs. Participants receive a tax-free stipend of approximately $225 to about $375 monthly. In 2003, Foster Grandparents devoted over 78,000 hours to the program in Bureau, Carroll, LaSalle, Lee, Marshall, Ogle, Putnam, Stark and Whiteside Counties. Currently, eighty-eight Foster Grandparents are placed at sites in Amboy, Dixon, Earlville, Grand Detour, Henry, LaSalle, Mendota, Princeton, Rock Falls, Spring Valley, Sterling, Streator and Sublette. There continues to be a need for more volunteers in all areas.
